The Reality Check

Building for the Nigerian market exposes you to dynamic, unforgiving macro-economics.

Whether you are executing on the ground in Lagos or deploying capital from London, New York, or Toronto, this report cuts through PR narratives to deliver the raw truth about startup mortality in Nigeria.

Pattern 01

Earning in Naira, paying in dollars

Okra billed API calls in NGN while AWS invoiced in USD. Kippa imported POS terminals in USD to earn ₦10–₦30 per cash-out. Devaluation did the rest.

Okra · Kippa
What worked instead

Moniepoint kept hardware viable through manufacturing scale and high daily agent volume. The broader shift is to SoftPOS — any Android phone becomes a terminal over NFC. Build software-only collection (Tap-to-Pay, QR, USSD), or re-index contracts to float with FX.

Pattern 02

Acquisition cost above lifetime value

Edukoya paid $15–$30 per paying parent for a product households churned out of monthly. Lidya's interest income was consumed by bad debt write-offs.

Edukoya · Lidya
What worked instead

uLesson moved off paid social and into B2B2C: school partnerships, physical distributor networks, SD cards pre-loaded with content. Embedding a subscription in a telco data bundle drops CAC to near zero and lets the telco carry distribution.

Pattern 03

Governance, not the market

Bento Africa had >80% gross margins and low churn. Tax remittance disputes and leadership fallout closed it anyway. Medsaf stalled on board friction mid-raise.

Bento Africa · Medsaf
What the report recommends

Treat remittances as ring-fenced client money, not working capital. Monthly board reporting and one independent director cost little and catch the failure early. On payroll platforms, fiduciary compliance is the product.

Pattern 04

Fixed costs in an inflationary economy

FoodCourt owned the kitchens, the equipment and the riders. Diesel, rent and food inflation turned every extra order into a slightly larger loss.

FoodCourt · Mara
What worked instead

Chowdeck scaled asset-light: no kitchens, no inventory, no cooking liability — just order density, driver routing and dynamic fees. Under inflation, run the software layer and partner with underutilised commercial kitchens rather than leasing real estate.
